In the Manter Laboratory of Parasitology, the database named “PARASITE” is running under Microsoft ACCESS and is served to the Web via a single DELL DIMENSION 4400 Workstation with SCSI disks and WIN2000 as the operating system.

The HWML parasite database was the first Parasitology Collection database in use in any museum and was developed here in the Manter Laboratory of Parasitology in 1985.

Running under DOS in R-Base, the system was very stable and useable for many years.  The database was transferred to a Windows based system on ACCESS in the fall of 1998. Our database programmers spent less than one month in transferring R-Base database file to ACCESS-97.

Data are entered into the main collection catalog file under the following table entries.  The relational links among files are shown
in this screen capture of the HWML "PARASITE" database.

Basic Entry Screen for the Database "PARASITE"
-As data are entered, the data are dumped directly to a temporary database for daily editing and cross-checking of data.
-The temporary database is then appended to the main HWML database.
-At the end of each week, the data are copied from the secure data entry machine to the online database machine, thus the actual working database is never “exposed” or attached to the machine on which the web server is running.
-The entry form is set to be tab-able, hitting tab jumps from one entry line to the next.
